My own internet searches revealed there are several completely separate "Bovan" families, with apparently no blood no links among them.
One extended family of Bovans apparently originated in the Southern USA. They are black.
My own Bovan family is from the Mostar region of Bosnia-Herzegovina. These Bovans can be traced back several generations to a few Bovan cousins who left Montenegro. Bovans originating in Montenegro can be found scattered throughout Yugoslavia (now Serbia), but it appears the most prolific Bovans were those who settled in the Mostar region. Of course now there are "Mostar Bovans" in England (Bradford, Leeds), Canada, and the USA, several countries in Western Europe, and probably elsewhere. They emigrated from Yugoslavia mostly after WWII. There is an old family legend that the "first" Bovan was a mistress of Napoleon Bonaparte. The Mostar Bovans are Serbian Orthodox, so most were driven out of the Mostar region during the recent Balkan war. Before then, there were at least 20 Bovan families in the village of Hodbina, near Mostar.
As I wrote above, there appears to be no connection between the Balkan Bovans, and other Bovan families.
