I've Always Had a Compost Heap

wherever I've lived
ever since I read Colin Wilson
who said
the brain's biggest failing is that it doesn't have a dustbin
and I said
there are no dustbins

Animal
lives in my drains, eats rats
bathes in washing-up water
waits for coffee grounds to be swilled down the sink
loves coffee

I tried composting coffee grounds
but they get all sticky
so now I tip them away –
no one's perfect

Cigarette Poem

Sometimes we talk
not today
the first time I've known you sit beside me
on a bench, warm
fallen sun, leaves
facing west

I read, as if you are invisible
You lean closer to see the page
Hair touches
breath, scent

You smile
naughty, happy

This is how it is
