Your cellar
had a pedal-powered church organ
and crates full of rubbish books
Up one flight
the relic of bells and twisted wires
would once summon the servants

Back then I thought you were odd
a remainder from another age
or possibly another planet
but not now
not odd
just the first example
I ever noted

Ready-made vegeburgers, to me,
were an extreme luxury
so when you came round
for the first time, for a meal,
they seemed ideal
I didn't notice you grinning
you never said anything
We never did too much talking anyway

She bought a 5' long white chiffon scarf
not an essential purchase
she had an old woollen one for when it was cold
We had to eat beans on toast for a week to pay for it
and it wasn't real chiffon
I used to tie her up with it at night
She liked that
but I was bored
