The woman behind the counter at the deli
gives me a warm smile as I walk by
I notice the sign
Hot Dogs – £2.50
so I go, woof woof
which scares Mrs Humpreys
the lady who cleans the funeral parlour
– she's in the queue, thinking of Bobby

If I wake at night
and want a cigarette
I'll wander in the dark
down the garden path
look at the stars
smudge of clouds
must remember
to wear my shoes
a bed-full of guts
squashed slugs

We dance sometimes
I said I'd walk with you
when the ethers get weird
and the orchestra plays
nothing to live for
want you back
whatever happens
